Sad news has called your humble host away for a few days. Rose Shatter, my mother-in-law, passed away in Detroit today, and I will be flying back for her funeral. Born to Lebanese immigrants 85 years ago, Rose, like Rosie the Riveter, built bombs and rockets on the assembly lines during World War II; with her late husband Tony, she raised four daughters and built a successful car wash business. When I talk about the success of the middle class of the last century, and the assaults on the middle class today, I’m thinking of the Shatter family. RIP, Rosie.
