Thomas Reese, SJ, is a Jesuit priest and former editor of the Catholic magazine, America. In this brief interview, he reacts to the announced resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. Fr. Reese comments on the work of Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger in the Vatican before and after he was named Pope. Ratzinger ran the enforcement division (Office of the Congregation of the Faithful), and under the previous pope, John Paul II, he was responsible for managing the sex abuse scandals. Fr. Reese talks about unnamed health issues, and Benedict’s policies that led to recent political activism against gay marriage and contraception. Fr. Reese deplores the sex crimes of priests, but defends the current pope for responding to the issues faster than his predecessor.
